Network EnergyLink: http://www.nsdc.org/library/publications/jsd/allen192.cfm The eight-year-old League of Professional Schools coined the term Practitioner-Driven Network (PDN) to describe networks, like the League, that put teachers and principals at the center of their efforts. Schools in these networks facilitate each others work in becoming democratic learning communities that are student-oriented and focused on improving teaching and learning for all. This article by Lew Allen, director of the League, describes the defining characteristics of PDNs, outline where they can work, discuss how they can be facilitated, list services they might offer, detail how to start a PDN, and provide ideas on how they can be maintained and evaluated. He argues that such networks provide powerful professional development experiences for the educators who are involved with them as well as boosting student learning in participating schools.
